ESPERANTO COURSE FOR BEGINNERS

LESSON 1

Esperanto is spoken as it is written; each letter representes one sound only.

Pronounce o as o in bone or hole.

mono = moneyhomo = man, human
mondo = worldpomo = apple

The grammatical rules of Esperanto have no exceptions; learn them thoroughly. All words have definite endings according to what part of speech they represent.

The ending of the noun is always o.

sono = soundnomo = name

Pronounce a like a in far, father.

patro = fatherfrato = brother
mano = handtablo = table

The ending of the adjective is always a.

bona = goodsana = healthy
granda = great, bigalta = high
nova = newkara = dear

Pronounce u like u in rule.

suno = sununu = one
lumo = lightsur = on, upon

Pronounce e like e in there.

bela = nice, beautifulestas = am, is, are
vera = truetre = very
hela = brightde = of, from

Pronounce i like i in machine.

libro = bookmi = I
viro = manvi = you
filo = sonli = he
domo = housekie (kee-eh) = where
al = totie (tee-eh) = there
en = inkun = with
la = thenur = only

The accent is always upon the next to the last syllable.

amiko = friendparolas = speaks
matura = ripe, maturelaboras = works

Esperanto has no word for a or an.

onklo = uncle, an uncle
letero = letter, a letter

EXERCISE

La bona patro.
La patro estas bona.
Kara nomo.
La alta domo estas nova.
Sur la tablo estas matura pomo.
Kie estas la onklo?
La onklo estas en la domo; li parolas al la patro.
Viro laboras.
Mi estas en la domo.

Where is he?
He is there.

The book is very good.
