My wife Angela and I were invited to go on a group walk to the summit of little Ring Mountain, which lies on the east side of the Marin peninsula. In the event, we were by ourselves for this lovely, sunny walk.

From Highway 101 north of San Francisco, exit at Paradise Drive (about 3 miles south of the Richmond Bridge exit). Follow Paradise Drive southeast for about a mile until you reach Westward Drive. This is a good spot from which to start.

The main departure point is from Paradise Drive, about a quarter of a mile beyond Paradise Drive; there is room for several cars to park off-road along the right side. We did not know this, however, so drove somewhat more than a quarter of a mile up Westward Drive, where we parked on the east side. At the end of Westward Drive there is an old chain-link fence, part of which has been rolled out of the way. Just beyond the opening is an open-space trail sign. Go left across a small plank bridge under the trees and emerge into the open in just a few yards; you can look down to your left over the little valley, between housing developments, up which the Phyllis Ellman trail ascends.

Follow the narrow trail along the side of the hill. This part of the hill is moorland, with rock outcroppings here and there. You will zigzag slightly as you climb, but the general trend will be to the east. There are good views out over the bay to the north, particularly in the direction of San Quentin State Prison, a huge mass of buildings shining yellow in the sun.

On the way to the top, you'll pass two tree-covered mounds. The first is fairly low down and you pass it fairly closely, on your right. The second is much higher up, but you pass it at a distance, well above.

Eventually, you will reach the east-west ridge connecting the two summits. Here, at a sign indicating that you are on the Phyllis Ellman trail, you find yourself on a somewhat wider but rockier track that follows the crest. Apparently, the eastern summit is the higher one, by twenty or thirty feet; but we went west, since there appeared to be more build-up on the eastern plateau.

Go to the right (west) and climb on up the road for about a quarter of a mile until you reach the western summit. The highest point seems to be in a mass of rocky outcroppings to the left of the trail, where you will also find a memorial plaque to John Thomas Howell. Views south toward San Francisco and west toward Mount Tamalpais, on the other side of highway 101 and Mill Valley, are quite lovely.

From here, you can return the way you came to where you left your car, though in fact several other trails lead northwest into another part of Corte Madera and south into Tiburon.
