January 1, 1998: Golden Gate National Recreation Area

   Start out along the route described by the hike of February 23, 1997 and follow this route until you reach the summit of the Fox Trail.

   From here you have three choices. You can follow the ridge inland, drop back down to the Coastal Trail as in the earlier hike, or follow the Fox Trail directly down to the northwest. This is a fairly steep trail, well-used, whose main attraction is the rapid unfolding of the view out to the north over Muir Beach and towards Mt. Tamalpais. In maybe half a mile or a bit more, you'll join the Coastal Trail at the broad col just south of Muir Beach. As in the earlier hike, you might want to climb a few yards up to the viewpoint on the west side of the trail and relax for a few minutes, weather permitting.

   Continue down to Muir Beach as before. Our group was headed toward the Pelican Inn, a delightful English-style pub. Most of the members of the group followed the horse trail to the Inn. To do this, just before you reach the bridge across the small stream at the south end of the Muir Beach parking lot, turn sharp right and follow the broad trail. This keeps you to the east of the stream, on a slightly raised dike between the stream and a broad, marshy pastureland with ponds where horses are wont to graze. In about a quarter of a mile you will come to the Inn.

   On the other hand, you may find it more convenient to go to the parking lot, either because you are meeting somebody and think they might be there, or because you want to quickly visit one of the outdoor toilets in the parking lot. This route has its attractions, too. Although the parking lot itself has little to recommend it (unless you like cars; there are four rows of them), once you reach its north end and turn right, you'll find yourself following along a beautiful, tree-covered lane that will lead you, in under a quarter mile, to the Inn.
