The trail begins to the right of a pair of restrooms just off the parking lot. Keep right of these outhouses and climb right through a redwood forest past turn-offs to the campground' walk-in campsites. After about 50 yards the trail seems to split; keep right. A hundred yards further the trail turns hard left and continues climbing.

At this point, by the way, note the clusters of redwoods to your left; these compact groves have apparently developed from a single parent tree. As you continue to climb, you'll see ferns, trilliums and sorrel growing along the side of the path in this cool north-slope forest. And gradually the redwoods will yield to more isolated Douglas fir trees.

After about a half mile you'll encounter a grove of the octopus-like California buckeye. Here you are on a northeast slope, and have occasional views through the trees out over Willow Creek Canyon. In another two hundred yards the forest suddenly gives way to an open grassy north-facing slope, whose main tree population consists of scattered juvenile Douglas firs.

In another two hundred yards you'll notice a high rocky promontory on your right. There is a nice path to the top, from which you'll have excellent views north to the mouth of the Russian River at Jenner. A nice place to stop and catch a breather -- which you may need after climbing to the top.

Leaving the promontory, contour on west across open slope replete with blackberry vines, ferns and horsetails, not to mention tons of yarrow, which seems to be found everywhere in this area. You'll have good views north all along here. Also take note of the dense forest uphill to your left. And be sure to watch out for poison oak!

Maybe a quarter of a mile from the promontory, you'll cross a streamlet on a three-plank bridge as you enter the mentioned forest, which seems to consist entirely of redwood. These are large, but small enough that they are probably second growth -- perhaps planted there after an original population was logged out.

You move in and out of the northern fringe of the forst for maybe three hundred yards, at which point, after crossing a similar streamlet, you emerge permanently onto an open slope. Here you'll find (in springtime) daisies, dandelions, salmonberries and an occasional bush of lupine. After a bit the trail starts to descend.

When, after some distance, you pass on your right a small grove of very old, very low, very twisted Douglas firs, realize that this will be your last shade along the route you are following. From here on, you are in what is essentially open country.

In another three hundred yards you reach the bottom of this descent and curve left, to contour around the head of a canyon, where you'll cross a nice little rivulet. Then contour back west up an open slope, from which, after another 300 yards, you'll have views north not only to the river's mouth but to the highway 1 road bridge. Here you'll be following a fairly level trail; there are occasional groves of Douglas fir, but they are well off the trail.

Four hundred more yards brings the ocean into view ahead. You'll get a good view of the terrace from Shell Beach to the promontory south of Blind Beach. Here the final descent begins, down a fairly shallow and wide trail, until, after another quarter mile, you come to the gate by highway 1, the west end of the trail, just across the highway from the entrance to Shell Beach and -- if you wish -- a connection with the Kortum Trail north to Blind Beach or south to Wright's Beach. If you haven't arranged for a pickup, this is the point at which to turn around and walk back to your car.

For our Memorial Day Weekend outing, my son David and I decided to hike the trail from the Pomo Canyon Campground to Shell Beach, in the Sonoma Coast State Beaches.
